The Program
The PPGHA promotes interdisciplinary studies in art history from a global perspective. The program embraces extremely diverse research projects from a spatial-temporal standpoint, including, among others, studies on Greco-Roman antiquity; the global Renaissance; art produced in Brazil between the 19th century and the present moment; Carnival in its longue durée; the so-called "Afro-Brazilian art" and indigenous artistic production. These varied fronts share a common premise: the need to decentralize and renew both the objects and methods of the discipline, creating a multicentric perception of the world and the arts.
The PPGHA intends to participate in a qualified manner in current debates about the art historical discipline and, more specifically, about the perspective of Global Art History.
Mission
To contribute to the development of an Art History engaged with contemporary society's issues, promoting the updating and improvement of technical-scientific and artistic-cultural knowledge for qualified and critical performance in the scientific, educational, and cultural fields, including teaching activities in Basic or Higher Education, in scientific research, in cultural and heritage institutions, or in specific demands of the job market in the Art and Culture area, having as ethical premises the inclusion of social, racial, gender, and environmental diversity, respect for the free circulation and debate of ideas, the encouragement of developing new methodologies and epistemologies, and the full exercise of citizenship.
Purpose
The PPGHA intends to establish itself as a leading reference center for training masters and doctors who contribute to the advancement of national and international debates about the art historical discipline and, more specifically, about the perspective of Global Art History, contributing to the decolonization of thought about Art and Culture and to the adoption of a perspective committed to current social issues.
