From Possessed to Redeemer: the unwanted Princess Isabel and her imagery under the gaze of Angelo Agostini in the Revista Illustrada during the second half of the 19th century.

Abstract:

The present study seeks to understand the construction of an imagery about Princess Isabel from the perspective of the illustrator Angelo Agostini, in his work for the Revista Illustrada, between the years 1876 and 1898. During this period, the images created about the Princess had different approaches, ranging from her rejection to the possibility of a Third Reign to the title of Redeemer, the latter connected to her activities that contributed to the end of slavery in Brazil. The research analyzes the visual repertoire produced by the artist in Rio de Janeiro, aiming to delve into the reception of the Princess in a daily communication medium of the Brazilian population. It also aims to analyze how her impact was amplified in light of the political events of the period. Thus, the present study seeks to establish a relationship between the creation and circulation of the image of the Princess, which would later become a heroine for the Republic.
