The Program

The Postgraduate Program in Art History (PPGHA) of the State University of Rio de Janeiro promotes interdisciplinary studies in art history from a global perspective. The program encompasses research projects covering a broad range of spatial and temporal categories – among others, in fields such as Greco-Roman antiquity; the global Renaissance; art produced in Brazil between the nineteenth century and the present; carnival in its longue durée; artistic production characterized as “Afro-Brazilian art”, as well as that by indigenous peoples. A common premise unites these disparate threads: the need to decentralize and renew both objects and methods of the discipline, towards the purpose of generating a multi-centered perception of the world and of the arts.

The PPGHA endeavors to play an informed part in current debates on the discipline of art history and, more specifically, to contribute to perspectives on Global Art History.
